As a person that menstruates has it ever occurred to you that your usual box of sanitary
products doesn’t have an ingredient label? We know you’re probably having a look right
now… Yes, we told you. Your shampoo has an ingredient label, so do products such as your
deodorant, so why is it that a product that has contact with one of the most absorbent parts
of your body have no ingredient label? And without an ingredient label how do you know
what your sanitary products are made from or what they contain?
You’ve probably just assumed all these years that it might be cotton? Yes? Well not
necessarily. Unfortunately for us, the ingredients of our generic sanitary products aren’t
always just cotton and most of the time it’s way more than that. In fact a lot of the time,
unless stipulated, your sanitary products use ingredients such as synthetic fibers, perfumes
and bleaches. And we wonder why they don’t openly give us an ingredient label.
Since they won’t do it, we’ve taken the liberty to give you a list of some of the ingredients
that may be in your favourite sanitary brand.
1. The number 1 ingredient of generic sanitary products is Rayon. Rayon is a synthetic
material that is associated with the increase of the likelihood of TSS (Toxic shock
syndrome). This is because this synthetic material can pull too much moisture from
the vaginal walls and leave tiny synthetic fibers on the soft skin there, therefore
increasing the risk of TSS.
2. Non-organic cotton. This cotton is not only mostly genetically modified (GMO) but it
has also been sprayed with large amounts of pesticides and herbicides in order to aid
the cotton’s growth. The residue of these substances is then present in the cotton
used in your sanitary products. Cotton needs to be organic!!
3. Fragrance/Perfume. Fragrance chemicals can be extremely harmful. Sanitary
products with fragrances are laced with artificial colours, polyester, adhesives and
many more dangerous chemicals.
4. Chlorine. Generic sanitary products are bleached using chlorine to obtain the stark
white look.
5. Dioxin. Dioxin is created when tampon and pad fibers are bleached. Dioxin is a
serious public health threat and has no “safe” level of exposure!!!!! It’s linked to
abnormal tissue growth in the abdomen and reproductive organs, abnormal cell
growth, and immune system suppression.
6. BPA Plastic and other substances. A lot of these substances are linked to cancer and
have hormone-disrupting chemicals. The dangers of plastic exposure in sanitary
products is underrated.

We have the right to know what’s in our menstrual products! And that’s why Sheba
products have an ingredient label! We are different because we give you full disclosure and
transparency! This should be mandatory for any product that goes in and on human bodies!
Besides the ingredients, these generic products are not only bad for us, but for the
environment as well. On average menstruators will use between 11000 and 16000 sanitary

products in their lifetime. This means a tremendous amount of the products end up in
landfills and water treatment facilities because they are not biodegradable! Their effect on
the environment is detrimental. Let’s take action!
We want you to make an informed decision when it comes to the products you buy. Not
only for yourself, but for the environment as well. Let’s revolutionize the feminine hygiene
industry and demand transparency. Knowledge is power!
